Overview

Esomeprazole sodium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication used for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other acid-related conditions. It works by irreversibly binding to the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells, inhibiting the final step in gastric acid production. This results in reduced gastric acid secretion that persists longer than 24 hours. It is available as an injectable formulation for intravenous administration.
