Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Espranor is an oral lyophilisate formulation of buprenorphine, a partial mu-opioid receptor agonist and kappa-opioid receptor antagonist. Developed by Martindale Pharma (now part of Ethypharm), this formulation is designed as a freeze-dried wafer that disintegrates almost instantaneously upon contact with the tongue. It is primarily indicated for the substitution treatment of opioid drug dependence. The oral lyophilisate technology offers significant clinical advantages over traditional sublingual tablets, including substantially increased bioavailability and a rapid disintegration time (typically under 15 seconds), which facilitates supervised dosing and reduces the risk of medication diversion or accidental spitting. Due to its higher bioavailability, doses of Espranor are not directly interchangeable with other sublingual buprenorphine products and typically require downward adjustment.
