ESS (Erythropoietin Stimulating System) is an orally administered medical food developed by Targeted Medical Pharma for the management of anemia of chronic disease. The formulation consists of a proprietary blend of amino acids and neurotransmitter precursors, including arginine, serine, histidine, and glutamine, which serve as the nutritional building blocks required for the endogenous production of erythropoietin (EPO). Unlike recombinant erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) that provide exogenous hormone, ESS is designed to stimulate the body's natural synthesis of EPO to enhance erythropoiesis and improve hemoglobin levels. This approach aims to provide a safer therapeutic profile by leveraging natural regulatory mechanisms in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions. Clinical development reached Phase 3, although the pivotal trial was terminated due to corporate reorganization.
