ESS-W (Engineered Skin Substitute) is an investigational autologous tissue-engineered skin product developed by Amarantus BioScience Holdings (through its subsidiary Cutanogen) for the treatment of extensive, deep partial- and full-thickness thermal burns. The product is a combination of cultured epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts, both derived from the patient's own skin, which are expanded in vitro and seeded onto a bovine collagen-glycosaminoglycan biopolymer scaffold. This process creates a full-thickness skin substitute containing both epidermal and dermal components. ESS-W is designed to provide permanent wound closure and significantly reduce the requirement for large donor sites associated with traditional split-thickness skin autografts, which is particularly critical for patients with burns covering a high percentage of their total body surface area. The product has received Orphan Drug Designation from the U.S. FDA for the treatment of hospitalized patients with deep partial and full-thickness burns requiring grafting.
