Overview
This intervention consists of a mixture of essences and essential oils delivered via a nasal stick for olfactory stimulation. It is being evaluated by the Etablissement Public de Santé Barthélemy Durand as a non-pharmacological strategy to reduce the consumption of 'as needed' (PRN) benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZRAs) and Z-drugs in stabilized psychiatric outpatients. The therapy leverages the calming and sedative properties of specific volatile organic compounds found in essential oils to manage anxiety and sleep disturbances. By providing a sensory alternative to pharmacological sedation, the intervention aims to help patients manage acute symptoms without increasing their medication burden.
