This essential amino acid (EAA) supplement was developed and studied by researchers at the University of Oregon to prevent muscle atrophy in older adults undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The formulation is a specific mixture of eight essential amino acids: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, and valine. It acts by stimulating muscle protein synthesis and attenuating muscle protein breakdown, primarily targeting skeletal muscle tissue to counteract the significant quadriceps and hamstrings atrophy typically associated with knee replacement surgery. Clinical trials (NCT02145949 and NCT00760383) have demonstrated that a twice-daily 20-23 gram oral dose, initiated one week prior to surgery and continued for several weeks post-operatively, significantly improves functional mobility and mitigates muscle loss in patients aged 50-80.
