Overview
Essential balm is a traditional multipurpose topical ointment formulated from a blend of herbal and aromatic ingredients. It is primarily used for the relief of minor muscle and joint pain, headaches, insect bites, mild skin irritation, and symptoms associated with colds such as nasal congestion. The typical formulation includes menthol, camphor, peppermint oil or dementholised mint oil, eucalyptus oil, clove oil or cassia oil (cinnamon), paraffin (hard & soft), petroleum jelly or similar bases. The mechanism of action relies on counterirritant effects—ingredients like menthol and camphor produce cooling or warming sensations that distract from deeper musculoskeletal pain while increasing local blood flow. Some versions may also include methyl salicylate for additional analgesic effect. Essential balm is widely used in Asia and Africa as an over-the-counter remedy for various minor ailments[1][2][8].
