Overview

Essential Bee Venom (eBV), also known as Sweet Bee Venom, is a purified preparation of bee venom (apitoxin) used in Korean medicine for pharmacopuncture, which involves injecting medicinal substances at acupuncture points. [1, 21] It is specifically processed to remove major allergenic components, such as the enzyme phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and histamine, while aiming to retain therapeutically active peptides like melittin. [3, 24] This purification process is designed to reduce local allergic reactions like pain, swelling, and itching that are common with standard bee venom injections, while maintaining the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. [3, 24] eBV is primarily used to treat musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions. [21] A clinical trial (NCT02364349) directly compared the local allergic responses of eBV and standard bee venom, confirming that eBV produced significantly fewer local reactions. [24]
