Overview

An investigational aromatherapy intervention evaluated by Indiana University for the management of symptom burden in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The intervention utilizes hydrogel adhesive patches infused with specific essential oils—peppermint (or mandarin for sensitive patients) to address chemotherapy-induced nausea, vomiting, and retching (CINVR), and lavender to address anxiety. Manufactured by Wyndmere Naturals, Inc., these patches provide a hypoallergenic, occlusive barrier that allows for the inhalation of aromatic compounds without direct skin contact with the oils. In a randomized, controlled Phase 2 trial involving 92 inpatients, the intervention was found to be safe and associated with high patient satisfaction, although it did not achieve statistically significant improvements in symptom scores compared to a non-scented placebo patch.
