esterified estrogens

Esterified estrogens are a man-made mixture of estrogenic substances primarily used to treat symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, burning or irritation. The principal component is estrone (as sodium estrone sulfate), typically comprising 75% to 85% of the mixture; sodium equilin sulfate makes up 6% to 15%, with the total not less than 90%. This medication is also indicated for estrogen replacement in women with ovarian failure or other conditions causing low estrogen levels and may be used in certain cases for advanced prostate and breast cancer symptom management. Mechanistically, it acts as an agonist at the estrogen receptor to restore or supplement endogenous estrogen activity[1][4][5][6].
