Esterified hyaluronic acid matrix (eHAM) is a bioresorbable wound scaffold composed of HYAFF, a benzyl ester of hyaluronic acid. It is designed to provide a three-dimensional extracellular matrix (ECM) that facilitates the migration of fibroblasts and endothelial cells, promoting angiogenesis and the formation of organized granulation tissue, often referred to as a neodermis. The matrix is typically bilayered, featuring a non-woven fiber layer of esterified hyaluronic acid and a semi-permeable silicone top layer that acts as a temporary epidermis to control moisture loss and protect the wound from external contamination. It is primarily indicated for the management of chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers, as well as acute wounds like deep burns and surgical excisions, often serving as a preparatory bed for split-thickness skin grafting (STSG).
