Overview

This is an experimental formulation of estradiol designed for buccal (oral mucosa) delivery via toothpaste. Developed for research purposes by the University of Texas-Houston with support from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), it aims to improve patient compliance for estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in postmenopausal women by integrating medication into a daily routine (brushing teeth). The formulation contains 0.77 mg of estradiol per cc of toothpaste. Estradiol acts as an agonist at estrogen receptors to alleviate postmenopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
