Overview

The combination of estrogen and fluoxetine refers to the co-administration of estrogenic hormones (such as estradiol or conjugated estrogens) and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine. This therapeutic strategy is primarily investigated for the management of vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) and mood disturbances associated with menopause, perimenopause, and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). Estrogen acts as an agonist at estrogen receptors to stabilize thermoregulation and maintain bone density, while fluoxetine increases synaptic serotonin levels by inhibiting the serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby alleviating depressive and anxiety symptoms. While both components are individually FDA-approved, they are typically prescribed as separate agents rather than a fixed-dose combination product.
