eszopiclone

Eszopiclone is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic drug used for the treatment of insomnia. It is the active stereoisomer of zopiclone and belongs to the cyclopyrrolone class. Eszopiclone acts as a positive allosteric modulator at GABA-A receptor complexes, binding at or near benzodiazepine receptor sites, thereby enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA in the central nervous system. This action promotes sleep by decreasing sleep latency and improving sleep maintenance. Eszopiclone was developed by Sepracor and is marketed under the brand name Lunesta. It was approved by the FDA in 2004 for both short-term and long-term management of insomnia[1][3][5][7].
