etacarinat

Etacarinat (as etacarinat hydrochloride) is a novel small molecule antihypertensive agent developed by Jiangsu Enhua Pharmaceutical. It functions as an ATP-sensitive potassium channel (KATP) opener. By activating these channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, etacarinat promotes potassium efflux, leading to membrane hyperpolarization and the subsequent closure of voltage-gated calcium channels. This reduction in intracellular calcium levels results in vasodilation and a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance, effectively lowering blood pressure. The drug is primarily being investigated for the treatment of primary mild to moderate essential hypertension and has progressed through Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials in China.
