Overview

Etamivan (also known as ethamivan or vanillic acid diethylamide) is a small molecule respiratory stimulant drug related to nikethamide. It was primarily used in the treatment of barbiturate overdose and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as other hypoventilatory states such as respiratory failure and postsurgical respiratory depression. Its mechanism of action involves stimulation of the central nervous system's respiratory centers—likely by acting on chemoreceptors in the brainstem that respond to carbon dioxide levels—thereby increasing ventilatory drive and depth of respiration. Etamivan has largely fallen out of clinical use due to its low therapeutic index and high incidence of adverse effects when administered intravenously; it is no longer marketed in the United States[1][2][3][6][7].
