Overview

Etamsylate is a synthetic hemostatic agent designed to reduce capillary bleeding by improving platelet adhesion and restoring capillary resistance. It acts by stimulating the interaction between platelets and the vascular endothelium, likely through the upregulation of P-selectin and the modulation of prostaglandin metabolism, specifically by reducing prostacyclin (PGI2) levels. Notably, etamsylate does not influence the clotting cascade, prothrombin time, or fibrinolysis, making it distinct from antifibrinolytics like tranexamic acid. It is widely utilized in the management of dysfunctional uterine bleeding (menorrhagia), prevention of periventricular hemorrhage in low-birth-weight neonates, and control of surgical or traumatic capillary oozing.
