Overview

Etanercept is a biologic fusion protein used to treat several autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, plaque psoriasis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. It acts as a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor by binding specifically to TNF-α and TNF-β (lymphotoxin-α), preventing them from interacting with cell surface TNF receptors and thereby reducing inflammation. Etanercept is produced using recombinant DNA technology as a dimeric fusion protein that combines the extracellular ligand-binding portion of the human p75 TNF receptor with the Fc portion of human IgG1. The drug was originally developed by Immunex and is now manufactured by Amgen following its acquisition of Immunex[5][6][8]. Etanercept was first approved for medical use in 1998.
