Overview
Etarfolatide is a radiopharmaceutical imaging agent that targets the folate receptor. It consists of a small molecule conjugated to technetium-99m, enabling non-invasive identification of cells expressing the folate receptor, such as certain cancer and inflammatory cells. Etarfolatide is primarily used as a companion diagnostic to select patients with folate receptor-positive tumors who may benefit from targeted therapies like vintafolide. It has been investigated in clinical trials for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (in combination with pegylated liposomal doxorubicin), non-small cell lung cancer, breast neoplasms, and other malignancies. The drug was developed by Endocyte and later by Novartis following acquisition.
