Overview

Etazocine is a benzomorphan-type opioid analgesic with mixed agonist-antagonist properties. It primarily acts as an agonist at the kappa-opioid receptor and has antagonistic or partial agonistic activity at the mu-opioid receptor. This pharmacological profile allows it to provide effective analgesia with a lower risk of respiratory depression and physical dependence compared to pure mu-opioid agonists like morphine. In clinical practice, particularly in China and Japan, it is used for the relief of moderate to severe pain, including postoperative pain and as an adjunct to sedative agents like propofol during endoscopic procedures (e.g., enteroscopy) to enhance patient comfort and stability.
