ethacridine

Ethacridine is an acridine derivative primarily used as a topical antiseptic and as an abortifacient agent. As an antiseptic, it is effective mainly against Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococci and Staphylococci, but less so against Gram-negative bacteria. It is commonly applied in 0.1% solutions for the treatment of purulent skin infections, infected mucous membranes, wounds (including those that are difficult to heal), genital inflammation, oral infections, and skin abrasions[1][8]. Ethacridine's mechanism of action involves binding to bacterial DNA and inhibiting microbial protein synthesis by preventing DNA and RNA synthesis within the cell[8]. In obstetrics, it has been used for second-trimester abortion via extra-amniotic or intra-amniotic instillation; this method is considered safer than hypertonic saline[1][5]. Recent research also suggests that ethacridine can inactivate viral particles such as SARS-CoV-2 by preventing their binding to host cells[6].
