Ethanol + 2-propanol is a combination of two simple aliphatic alcohols—ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and 2-propanol (isopropyl alcohol)—commonly used as an antiseptic and disinfectant. Both components are small molecule solvents with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The mechanism of action involves denaturation of proteins and disruption of cell membranes in microorganisms, leading to rapid bactericidal and virucidal effects. This combination is widely used in medical settings for hand sanitization and surface disinfection due to its efficacy against bacteria, viruses, and some fungi. The mixture does not show clinically significant enhancement or inhibition of dermal absorption when compared to the individual agents[6]. Both ingredients are rapidly acting topical antiseptics with similar central nervous system depressant effects if absorbed systemically at high doses[8].
