Overview

Ethibloc is a sclerosing and embolizing agent composed of zein (a corn protein), absolute alcohol (ethanol), and sodium amidotrizoate (a radiopaque contrast agent). It is primarily utilized for the percutaneous treatment of aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs), lymphatic malformations (such as cystic hygromas), and venous malformations. The mechanism of action involves the precipitation of zein upon contact with aqueous environments, such as blood or cyst fluid, as the ethanol solvent diffuses out. This process forms a viscous, fibrosing mass that occludes the targeted space, inducing local thrombosis and subsequent endosteal new bone formation or fibrosis. Ethibloc has also been investigated for transarterial renal ablation in renal cell carcinoma and portal vein embolization prior to liver resection. While effective in reducing cyst volume and inducing ossification, its use requires specialized expertise due to risks of complications like skin necrosis, inflammation, and unintended vascular extravasation.
