Overview
Ethinyl estradiol + levonorgestrel + folic acid is a combination oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two synthetic hormones—ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and levonorgestrel (a progestin)—along with folic acid (as levomefolate), a B vitamin supplement. The primary mechanism of action is the suppression of ovulation through inhibition of gonadotropins. Additional effects include thickening cervical mucus to hinder sperm entry and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Folic acid supplementation helps maintain adequate folate levels in women who may become pregnant[1][2][8].
