Overview

Ethinylestradiol + gestodene is a combined hormonal contraceptive delivered via a transdermal patch. Developed by Bayer, it contains ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen, and gestodene, a third-generation progestin. The primary mechanism of action is the inhibition of ovulation by suppressing the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. Additionally, it induces changes in the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and alters the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. This transdermal delivery system is designed to provide a steady release of hormones over a seven-day period, offering an alternative to daily oral contraceptive pills. Although it received marketing authorization in the European Union under the brand name Lisvy, Bayer later decided not to launch the product in several markets for commercial reasons.
