Overview

Ethionamide sulfoxide is the major active metabolite of ethionamide, a second-line antitubercular agent. It is formed via hepatic metabolism and possesses antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Ethionamide sulfoxide contributes to the bacteriostatic and potentially bactericidal effects of ethionamide by inhibiting mycolic acid synthesis, thereby interfering with cell wall formation in mycobacteria. The metabolite is notable for retaining the antimicrobial properties of the parent drug and is integral to ethionamide’s pharmacologic profile[1][2][5].
