Overview
Ethonafide (AMP-53) is a small molecule anticancer agent belonging to the azonafide series, developed by AmpliMed Corp. It is an anthracene-containing derivative of amonafide designed to provide potent antineoplastic activity with reduced cardiotoxicity compared to traditional agents like mitoxantrone. Ethonafide acts as a topoisomerase II inhibitor by stabilizing the enzyme-DNA cleavable complex, leading to DNA strand breaks and apoptosis. While primarily investigated for the treatment of prostate cancer, it has also demonstrated potential therapeutic effects in preclinical models of multiple sclerosis.
