Overview

Ethosuximide is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to control absence (petit mal) seizures in patients with epilepsy. It belongs to the succinimide class of antiepileptic drugs and works by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The main mechanism of action is antagonism (blockade) of T-type voltage-gated calcium channels, which are involved in generating the rhythmic burst firing associated with absence seizures. Ethosuximide is considered a first-line treatment for absence seizures due to its efficacy and relatively favorable side effect profile compared to alternatives like valproic acid. It is available as both capsules and syrup for oral administration[1][2][3][5].
