Overview

Ethotoin is a hydantoin derivative anticonvulsant used to control generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) and complex partial (psychomotor) seizures. It acts primarily by stabilizing the seizure threshold and preventing the spread of seizure activity in the brain, without causing general central nervous system depression. The mechanism of action is similar to that of phenytoin, involving inhibition of nerve impulses in the motor cortex by lowering sodium ion influx, thereby limiting tetanic stimulation. Ethotoin is administered orally and was marketed under the brand name Peganone. It has largely fallen out of common use but remains an approved antiepileptic agent[1][2][3][4][5].
