ethoxzolamide

Ethoxzolamide is a sulfonamide small molecule that acts as a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It is used primarily in the treatment of glaucoma and duodenal ulcers and as a diuretic. Ethoxzolamide may also be used in some forms of epilepsy. Its mechanism involves inhibition of carbonic anhydrase enzymes (notably carbonic anhydrase I), which decreases reabsorption of water, sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate in the proximal renal tubules—leading to its diuretic effect—and reduces intraocular pressure by decreasing aqueous humor production in the eye. Inhibition within the central nervous system increases seizure threshold[1][2][4][5].
