Overview

The ethyl acetate fraction of Boehmeria nivea (EA-BN) is a plant extract-based herbal medicine under investigation for the treatment of allergic asthma. Derived from the ramie plant (Urticaceae family), EA-BN is administered orally and exerts its therapeutic effects by modulating the immune response. Its mechanism of action involves the suppression of dendritic cell activation and the inhibition of T-helper 2 (Th2) cell differentiation. This inhibition is achieved by reducing the expression of the transcription factor GATA-3, which subsequently downregulates the production of Th2-associated cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Preclinical studies in mouse models have demonstrated that EA-BN significantly reduces airway inflammation, mucus overproduction, and inflammatory cell infiltration. The research is primarily led by the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB).
