Ethyl biscoumacetate is a synthetic small molecule anticoagulant of the 4-hydroxycoumarin class. It acts as a vitamin K antagonist, inhibiting the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase and thereby blocking the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X in the liver. Its mechanism of action and clinical effects are similar to those of warfarin. Ethyl biscoumacetate has been primarily used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
