Overview
Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate (commonly known as IR3535) is a synthetic insect and tick repellent structurally modeled after the naturally occurring amino acid beta-alanine. Developed by Merck KGaA, it is classified as a biopesticide by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) due to its low toxicity and favorable environmental profile. It is applied topically to human skin and clothing to prevent bites from mosquitoes, ticks, flies, lice, and other biting arthropods, thereby reducing the transmission of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, Zika, and Lyme disease. Unlike DEET, it is odorless, does not dissolve most plastics, and is safe for use in infants, children, and pregnant women.
