Overview

Ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE) is a cationic surfactant and potent antimicrobial agent derived from the natural substances L-arginine, lauric acid, and ethanol. It is widely recognized for its broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and molds. The molecule acts by disrupting the cell membranes of microorganisms, leading to increased permeability, loss of metabolic viability, and eventually cell death. Originally developed as a food preservative (where it is known as E243), its application has expanded into oral care and personal hygiene. In oral health, it is utilized in mouthrinses and toothpastes to prevent dental plaque formation and treat gingivitis by targeting the microbial biofilms on tooth surfaces. It is characterized by low toxicity and rapid metabolism into naturally occurring amino acids and fatty acids.
