ethyl salicylate

Ethyl salicylate is a small molecule analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent belonging to the salicylate class. It is the ethyl ester of salicylic acid and is primarily used topically for the relief of musculoskeletal pain and inflammation, including sports-related pain. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) enzymes, leading to reduced prostaglandin synthesis and thus decreased pain and inflammation. Additionally, it acts as a counter-irritant by promoting local vasodilation when applied to the skin. Ethyl salicylate is also used in perfumery and artificial flavors due to its pleasant wintergreen-like odor.
