Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) is a non-adhesive, non-absorbable, permanent liquid embolic agent used in interventional radiology and endovascular neurosurgery. It is typically supplied as a kit containing the copolymer, tantalum powder for radiopacity, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent. When the mixture is injected into a blood vessel, the DMSO solvent rapidly diffuses into the blood, causing the EVOH to precipitate and form a solid, sponge-like cast that conforms to the vessel's shape and occludes blood flow. The primary clinical application is the preoperative embolization of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), but it is also utilized for peripheral vascular malformations, endoleaks following aneurysm repair, and various types of hemorrhage.
