Ethylenediamine is a small organic compound (C2H8N2) primarily used as an industrial chemical building block and excipient in pharmaceutical preparations such as creams. It is a colorless liquid with an ammonia-like odor and serves as a stabilizer for certain drugs, notably aminophylline, by increasing their solubility. In medicine, its main approved use is within allergenic epicutaneous patch tests to aid in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. Ethylenediamine acts as a contact sensitizer and can cause local or generalized allergic reactions upon exposure[1][2][3][4]. Mechanistically, it has been shown to activate Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems—partly by direct action and partly by releasing endogenous GABA—though this effect is not its primary clinical application[6]. Industrially, it is also used in the synthesis of chelating agents (such as EDTA), epoxy curing agents, resins, emulsifiers, textile lubricants, antifreeze inhibitors, and other chemicals[4][5].
