Overview

Ethylenediamine dihydrochloride is a chemical compound utilized as a diagnostic allergen in patch testing, specifically within the Thin-layer Rapid Use Epicutaneous (TRUE) Test system. Developed by Allerderm, it is indicated for the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis in patients suspected of having a sensitivity to ethylenediamine-related compounds. The drug acts as a hapten; upon topical application via a patch, it penetrates the skin and conjugates with endogenous proteins to form a complete allergen. This complex is then recognized by T-lymphocytes in sensitized individuals, triggering a localized Type IV (delayed-type) hypersensitivity reaction. Clinical evaluations, such as Phase 4 bioequivalence studies, have assessed the impact of different vehicle formulations, like methylcellulose and polyvinylpyrrolidone, on the allergen's diagnostic performance and release profile.
