This combination therapy is utilized in periodontal regenerative surgery to treat deep intrabony defects. The procedure begins with the application of a 24% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) gel to the root surface, which acts as a chelating agent to remove the smear layer and expose the collagenous matrix of the dentin. This conditioning step is followed by the application of enamel matrix derivative (EMD), a biological product containing a purified acid extract of porcine enamel proteins, primarily amelogenins. EMD mimics the natural process of tooth development, stimulating the recruitment and differentiation of periodontal ligament cells, which leads to the regeneration of cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. In the clinical study led by Phạm Đình Thiên Khải, this combination is integrated with a connective tissue graft (CTG) wall technique to enhance soft-tissue stability and bone fill in patients with stage III-IV periodontitis.
