Overview

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) nanoparticles are a targeted therapeutic formulation designed to treat pathological calcification, particularly vascular calcification associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and atherosclerosis. This technology typically utilizes a nanoparticle carrier, such as albumin, functionalized with targeting ligands like anti-elastin antibodies to deliver the chelating agent EDTA specifically to sites of degraded elastin and mineral deposition. By localizing the chelation process, the therapy aims to dissolve hydroxyapatite crystals while avoiding the systemic side effects, such as hypocalcemia, that occur with free EDTA administration. Recent studies have demonstrated that these nanoparticles also act as senomorphics, reducing the expression of the NLRP3 inflammasome and other markers of cellular senescence in vascular cells, thereby potentially reversing the progression of vascular stiffness and calcification.
