Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ethylmethylthiambutene is a synthetic opioid analgesic of the thiambutene family. It is approximately 1.3 times as potent as morphine and acts primarily as an agonist at opioid receptors, especially the mu-opioid receptor. The drug produces strong analgesic effects but also carries a high risk of dependence and abuse similar to morphine. Ethylmethylthiambutene has been used for pain relief in both human and veterinary medicine, though it is now internationally controlled under Schedule I due to its abuse potential and lack of accepted medical use in many countries[2][4][5][7]. Its chemical structure features ethyl and methyl groups attached to a thiophene ring system.
