Overview

The Ethylvinyl Acetate (EVA) Vaginal Ring Delivery System is an experimental contraceptive method developed by Massachusetts General Hospital. It is designed to induce "medical castration" using a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, specifically leuprolide, which suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis to inhibit ovulation. To prevent the side effects associated with hormone deficiency (such as bone loss and vasomotor symptoms), the ring simultaneously releases physiologic levels of human sex steroid hormones (estrogen and progestin). This dual-action approach aims to provide effective contraception while maintaining a normal hormonal milieu. The system is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials for safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy in healthy women.
