Overview

Etilevodopa is a derivative of levodopa, developed as a prodrug to improve the pharmacokinetic properties of levodopa for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Like levodopa, it acts as a precursor to dopamine and is intended to cross the blood-brain barrier where it is converted into dopamine, supplementing deficient endogenous levels in patients with Parkinson's disease. Etilevodopa was designed to have better solubility and potentially more rapid absorption compared to standard levodopa formulations. Its mechanism of action involves increasing central dopamine concentrations by serving as a substrate for aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase, which converts it into active dopamine in the brain.
