Overview

Etiocholanedione is a naturally occurring steroid and an endogenous metabolite of androgens such as testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and androstenedione. It is also known as the C5 epimer of androstanedione. Unlike other androgens, it lacks androgenic activity but exhibits distinct biological effects including potent haematopoietic activity and antiobesity effects in animal models and humans. Etiocholanedione cannot be further metabolized into active steroid hormones like estrogens or more potent androgens. It has been studied for its ability to promote weight loss in clinical settings. Mechanistically, it acts as a neurosteroid with inhibitory effects on glycine-induced chloride currents in neurons[2][3][4].
