etofamide

Etofamide is a luminal amoebicide used primarily for the treatment of intestinal amebiasis caused by *Entamoeba histolytica*. It belongs to the dichloroacetamide class of drugs. Its primary therapeutic value lies in its direct action against trophozoites within the intestinal lumen; because it is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, it achieves high concentrations in the gut while maintaining a favorable safety profile with minimal systemic exposure. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in both adult and pediatric populations, typically administered in a multi-day regimen. While primarily used for amebiasis, it has also demonstrated some in vitro activity against other intestinal parasites like *Giardia lamblia*.
