Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Etofenamate is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the phenylanthranilic acid (fenamate) class. EFTS refers to a specific transdermal system (cataplasm/patch) developed by Teikoku Seiyaku for the treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries such as ankle sprains. It works by inhibiting the enzymes cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain and inflammation. The transdermal delivery allows for high local concentrations of the drug at the site of injury with minimal systemic exposure, reducing the risk of gastrointestinal side effects typically associated with oral NSAIDs.
