etonitazene

Etonitazene is a synthetic benzimidazole opioid first reported in 1957. It is an extremely potent opioid analgesic—approximately 1,000 to 1,500 times more potent than morphine in animal studies[5][8]. Etonitazene acts as a full agonist at the mu-opioid receptor and produces strong analgesic effects along with profound respiratory depression and high dependency potential. Due to these risks and its high abuse potential, it has never been approved for medical use in humans but has been used experimentally in animal addiction research[5][6]. Etonitazene is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance by the DEA due to its lack of accepted medical use and high risk of abuse[8]. It is sometimes encountered illicitly as part of the "nitazenes" group of synthetic opioids.
