Overview

Etonogestrel implant is a long-acting, reversible contraceptive device containing 68 mg of the synthetic progestin hormone etonogestrel. It is supplied as a small, flexible plastic rod that is inserted subdermally into the inner side of the upper arm by a healthcare provider. The implant provides continuous contraception for up to three years by slowly releasing etonogestrel into the bloodstream. Its primary mechanism of action is inhibition of ovulation through suppression of luteinizing hormone release; it also thickens cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and alters endometrial lining to reduce likelihood of implantation. Etonogestrel implants are highly effective (failure rate ~0.1%) and fertility typically returns rapidly after removal[2][3][4][5][6][9].
