Overview

Etoricoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor belonging to the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It was developed and commercialized by Merck. Etoricoxib exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. Its mechanism of action involves selective inhibition of the COX-2 enzyme, which reduces prostaglandin synthesis involved in pain and inflammation while sparing COX-1 activity, thereby lowering gastrointestinal side effects compared to traditional NSAIDs. Etoricoxib is indicated for symptomatic relief in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute gouty arthritis, primary dysmenorrhea, and other inflammatory pain conditions. It is approved in many countries but not in the United States due to regulatory concerns over cardiovascular safety[2][5][9].
