Overview

Etozoline is a long-acting loop diuretic that has been marketed in Europe under the brand names Diulozin, Elkapin, and Etopinil. It is a small molecule drug used primarily for its diuretic effects in the management of conditions such as congestive heart failure. Etozoline acts by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidney nephron. This leads to increased excretion of water and electrolytes (notably sodium and chloride), resulting in diuresis. Etozoline is rapidly metabolized to its active metabolite ozolinone[1][2][3]. Additionally, studies suggest that its vasodilating action may be mediated by inhibition of calcium influx into smooth muscle cells[6].
